What is data?

Updated: May 31, 2023

Data is a collection of facts, figures, statistics, measurements, observations, and other information that can be used to gain knowledge or insight. Data can be either quantitative or qualitative and is often collected and stored in different formats, such as text, images, audio or video files.

Data is often used to make decisions and gain insights in various fields, including business, science, healthcare, technology, education among others. For example, analysing data can help identify trends, predict future events, improve processes, and facilitate effective decision-making.

It is important to understand that data on its own does not have any meaning. The value of data lies in how it is collected, organised and analysed. Therefore, in order to be able to extract meaningful insights from data, it is essential to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and relevance of this data.
